Phil McAloon


Over the past 15 years, Phil has presented and developed a number of legal training courses and presentations for audiences ranging from senior lawyers to junior lawyers and non-lawyers, and in formats ranging from lectures to interactive seminars.  This training was a key focus of his practice in the Office of General Counsel, Australian Government Solicitor. 

Courses and presentations included:

  • Law and Logic: advice and arguments;
  • Understanding legislation for non-lawyers;
  • Statutory interpretation for lawyers — presented to Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department; Commonwealth Office of Legislative Drafting and Publishing; and a large number of Commonwealth, state and territory departments and agencies;
  • Constitutional law for new Commonwealth lawyers;
  • Machinery of Government for new Commonwealth lawyers;
  • Operation of the National Electricity Law, for the ACCC;
  • Administrative Law for lawyers;
  • Administrative Law for non-lawyers, with a focus on environmental statutes;
  • Advice writing and legal reasoning for lawyers;
  • Operation of the Commonwealth Financial Management and Accountability legislation and recovery of mistaken payments from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, for senior lawyers and financial managers; and
  • Operation of stamp duty amendments, for barristers and other lawyers.
