  • Christopher Balmford

    BA LLB (Hons) Monash University

    Christopher is an internationally recognised expert in making legal and related documents clear, accurate, and easy to use. Christopher was admitted to practice in 1988 and has worked in private practice and as a corporate plain language change agent at AMP. He was director of the Law Reform Commission of Victoria’s plain language business and he established Words and Beyond in 1998.

    Christopher provides plain-language training, rewrites documents, and advises on communication cultural-change programs. His clients include 16 government bodies, more than 20 public listed companies, 8 major national law firms (and other law firms), the Labour Organization of the United Nations, and the European Central Bank.

  • BA LLB University of Cape Town, University of Sydney; Grad Dip–Journalism

    Gina provides plain-language consulting and training services to lawyers and non lawyers; she specialises in grammar and language and is fascinated by the impact of tone in our communication. Gina graduated from the University of Cape Town as a lawyer in 1983. In the mid 1980s, she converted her law degree at the University of Sydney. She worked in industrial law in Johannesburg and then in commercial litigation for many years in Sydney. In the 1990s Gina worked in plain-language precedent drafting before moving to freelance legal and academic editing and proofreading. In 2004 she graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney in journalism and now works as a freelance journalist as well as grammar and language skills trainer. Gina is passionate in guiding people to know their own writing voice and in encouraging them to work with their writing strengths and weaknesses. In this process, she empowers writers so they gain a fresh enthusiasm for the task of writing.

  • BA LLB University of Melbourne, Admitted New York Bar

    Bob is a lawyer and plain language trainer and document writer. Bob graduated from law school in 1982 and spent several years working in the USA where he was admitted to the New York Bar. In 1984, he returned to Australia to start a legal practice with a focus on medical negligence.

    With a background in professional medical negligence litigation, Bob has long been aware that clear communication — or its absence — often lies at the heart of legal disputes. This awareness triggered his original interest in plain legal communication.

  • BA (Industrial Relations and Management Studies),
    Grad Dip in Applied Finance and Investments (FINSIA)

    Fulvia provides project management and communication consulting services. She specialises in large internal communications projects within major corporations.

    Fulvia is an experienced communications manager and project manager with very specialised skills in analysing, developing, writing and designing documents. She also manages the end-to-end document generation process.

    She has 19 years' experience in the financial services industry with detailed knowledge of insurance, investment and superannuation products and of financial services in general.
